congrats! wow ! what a huge image! i'm excited to see all the strokes, it's beautiful! I'm probably going to visit Toronto in the fall or late summer if you'd like a model! i can bring a gallon on orange paint.

Congrats! I was so taken by this painting when I first saw it -- by the expression especially, that it was a full ten minutes before I even noticed the cockatiel.
Now I can't help but notice him. Incredible! How do you scan things this big?

Hi Amir! haha, too bad about the email gods being against you too!! They are definitely against me as well! Anyway, here's the responses to your questions. They were all really good questions... lets just hope I don't have any trouble posting this or something now;) hehehe
A: My first question is: where should you start learning to paint? In drawing, the first principle would be construction and later perspective, what is the first fundamental of painting?
K: TONE is really the number one thing that a painter should focus on!(of course that's assuming that the drawing aspects are working - cuz obviously theyre reaaalllyy important in painting too;) even Leonardo said that he thought colour was secondary to tone:) It's said that as long as the tone is right, the colour doesn't really matter, and often that's pretty much true! Also, try to make sure that things stand out with tonal contrast, often times the most important things in the painting would stand out the most (this is especially useful to apply to background painting). also, most of the time the begnining painter struggles most with tone. They can get a colour pretty good, but not really the right lightness or darkness of the colur, and therefor their work lacks a sense of light and shape.... of course colour is important too:)
A: So far my paintings where mostly for school assignments, We're instructed to use gouache, but I also tried watercolor and ink-wash, would you suggest moving to a different medium?

K: Thats great that you're doing so well with gouache! I could never really get the hang of it! I think it's great to just try everything , and see what suits you, and so that you know how to get certain techniques, so you can use different ones in the same painting to achieve what you want. when layering that sorta thing do it with water colours and inks first (like a sky wash) then the acrylics or cell paints or whatever and then maybe some pencil crayon or pastel even.:) I bet you'd really like cell paints! and FW Inks! I've been getting into wax and stuff with my oil paintings these days, and yeah,I think it's just great to always be trying new materials:)
A: I think that the last one of Marlo as a mosquito is better than the previous because there's more depth to it and it feels warmer, I mixed all the colors, but its still mostly secondaries, I'm trying to think out of the "video box". The other paintings feel a bit pre-mature, I'd like to get more depth and warmth.
K: Yeah, your painting looks great! I think you could try getting even more colour variation into the main colours. for example in her red hair you could have the light area lean even more towards the yellow/orange side of things, and in the shadow side have it more pinky burgundy - Johnny was getting me to do this sorta thing all the time i the Dr Mr Horses office chair in Ren Seeks Help:)
